Higher proficiency allows access to advanced books that teach complex recipes and repair techniques essential for self-sufficiency. A character with low Reading ability cannot comprehend high-level technical guides, severely limiting their Crafting potential over time. Prioritize finding libraries or bookstores in safer zones to bulk up this stat early in the campaign. Reading also grants experience points toward the specific skill covered by the book, such as Cooking, Mechanics, or First Aid. This dual benefit makes exploring abandoned schools and offices a high-priority activity for dedicated survivors. Always carry a reliable light source, as reading is impossible in total darkness without proper illumination to see the text.
